Case study – Harvest Ride, Bracknell S278 lighting

Case study – Section 278 lighting design
Scheme – Harvest Ride, Warfield
Local Authority – Bracknell Forest Council
Division – Residential

In August 2014 MMA Lighting Consultancy Ltd were commissioned by Berkeley Homes to design an adoptable section 278 lighting design for the approval and adoption of Bracknell Forest Borough Council. The A3095 “Harvest Ride” is the Bracknell Northern Distributor road built as part of the Quelm Park development in the 1990s. The existing lighting along Harvest Ride was 8m columns with Philips SGS203 100w SON/T+ high pressure sodium lantern.

Land to the north of Harvest Ride had been acquired for re-development by Berkeley Homes and a new access and crossing point was being created off Harvest Ride where the Southern Link Road would eventually link up with the Three Legged Cross Road scheme, further north of Warfield.

The Local Authority provided a lighting design guide and a S278 new development specification. This would then be used by the MMA Lighting Consultancy design team to ensure that Berkeley Homes would have a lighting installation that would be eventually adopted by the Local Authority.

A thorough site survey of the existing highway was carried out to determine the supply points for the existing private cable network, this allowed our engineers to then commence the detailed street lighting design. All MMA Lighting Consultancy street lighting designs are submitted with a lighting schedule, risk assessment packs and a design methodology document. As this scheme was a detailed S278 lighting design with a private cable network, feeder pillar schematics and cable calculations were also supplied with the CAD drawings and lighting calculations.

The lighting design was carried out using Bracknell Forest Council’s standard specification galvanised steel lighting columns with Philips Luma LED lanterns. LED’s have a lamp life of up to 100k hours of operation meaning reduced cyclic maintenance visits would be required a reduction in the overall energy costs for the Local Authority and using the council approved CMS system with the latest technology LED lanterns, far less maintenance visits would be required.
