Case Study: Broad Lane, Bracknell

Case study – Section 278 lighting design
Scheme – Broad Lane, Bracknell
Local Authority – Bracknell Forest Council
Division – Residential

In 2006 MMA Lighting Consultancy Ltd were commissioned by WSP and George Wimpey to design an adoptable section 278 lighting design for the approval and adoption of Bracknell Forest Council. The detailed street lighting design was for two new proposed roundabouts off Broad Lane to create new accesses into the proposed RAF Staff College development which was to be constructed over the coming years.

The existing lighting along Broad Lane was age expired and non-compliant with any British Standard lighting class. Our involvement was to produce a new lighting design that ran from the A332 Bagshot Road down to the railway overbridge replacing the age expired columns and pole mounted lanterns. Two proposed roundabouts were constructed which required new lighting including a toucan crossing mid-way between the two access points.

The Local Authority provided a lighting design guide for the new Section 278 lighting design which would be used by the MMA Lighting Consultancy design team to ensure that WSP would have a lighting installation that would be eventually adopted by the Local Authority.

To compile the detailed street lighting design, exterior lighting calculation reports were completed using Lighting Reality design software with a detailed CAD drawing was submitted to the Local Authority for technical approval. All MMA Lighting Consultancy street lighting designs are submitted with a lighting schedule, risk assessment packs and a design methodology document to ensure CDM regulations are adhered to.

The lighting design was carried out using Bracknell Forest Council’s standard specification galvanised steel (Corus) lighting columns with Philips Iridium 100w SON/T+ lanterns on eight metre lighting columns. At the time of the design the high intensity discharge lighting was the main lamp used and at the time was the councils specification. The lighting unit was installed with a Mayflower remote monitoring node, although some of the columns have since had an LED lantern change and the CMS converted to the Telensa system.

Our Technical Director – Mark Chandler was visiting Bracknell on another site we are involved in during early May 2020 and took some site photos of the completed and occupied site.
