Do you need an existing lighting assessment?

Have an off site scheme with proposed highway works, not sure if the existing lighting on site is compliant with the relevant standards? Then you have come to the right place

Throughout the year, MMA Lighting Consultancy Ltd carry out a number of existing lighting assessments or existing lighting reviews for clients who have Section 278 works for a development that are unsure if the lighting levels will be compliant. With the introduction of LEDs across the UK, we often find if you do not need to relocate any lighting columns, the existing lighting when the lanterns are LED’s, can comply with BS5489: 2020. Carrying out a lighting review, can save the client a significant amount of money if they current installation is compliant with the relevant standards.

We recently carried out an existing lighting assessment within the City of Westminster as detailed below: –

Working with a London based developer we were appointed to carry out a review of the existing street lighting around New Zealand House in Maymarket – Westminster to determine if the existing lighting currently achieves the lighting levels recommended in BS5489:2020 for highway lighting.

Our involvement was to undertake a site survey , liaise with the local authority to obtain the existing LED lantern settings then carry out a thorough review for the client to confirm if the current lighting is suitable to remain, or recommend any improvements required to bring the lighting up to standard..

The following tasks were carried out: –

  • Site survey
  • Liaise with Westminster City Council to obtain a copy of the inventory/existing LED Lantern settings (required to ensure our review is as accurate as possible)
  • Lighting calculations using industry standard Lighting Reality software
  • Plan showing lighting unit positions and isolux contours
  • Existing lighting review report detailing our findings

The review carried out by MMA Lighting Consultancy Limited demonstrated to the client and local authority that the existing lighting currently complies with BS5489 which helped to save the client money and avoid the need for carrying out unnecessary lighting upgrades on this occasion.
