Case study – RAF Staff College, Bracknell

Case study – Section 38 lighting design
Scheme – Former RAF Staff College, Bracknell
Local Authority – Bracknell Forest Council
Division – Residential

In 2007 MMA Lighting Consultancy Ltd were commissioned by Taylor Wimpey to design an adoptable section 38 lighting design for the approval and adoption of Bracknell Forest Council. The detailed street lighting design was for on-site adoptable lighting south of Broad Lane in Bracknell on the site of the Former RAF Staff College.

The RAF Staff College at Bracknell was a Royal Air Force staff college in service during the second half of the 20th century. Its role was the training of staff officers in aspects of air force matters. Located off Broad Lane in Bracknell the site had a large Edwardian House called Ramslade House built in 1840 located within the complex. The Staff college finally closed in January 1997 and eventually sold off for residential development in 2004.

The Local Authority provided a lighting design guide for the new Section 38 lighting design which would be used by the MMA Lighting Consultancy design team to ensure that Taylor Wimpey would have a lighting installation that would be eventually adopted by the Local Authority.

To compile the detailed street lighting design, exterior lighting calculation reports were completed using Lighting Reality design software with a detailed CAD drawing was submitted to the Local Authority for technical approval. All MMA Lighting Consultancy street lighting designs are submitted with a lighting schedule, risk assessment packs and a design methodology document to ensure CDM regulations are adhered to.

The lighting design was carried out using Bracknell Forest Council’s standard specification galvanised steel (Corus) lighting columns with Philips Iridium 50w SON/T+ lanterns. At the time of the design the high intensity discharge lighting was the main lamp used and at the time was the councils specification. The lighting unit was installed with a Mayflower remote monitoring node, although some of the columns have since had an LED lantern change and the CMS converted to the Telensa system.

Our Technical Director – Mark Chandler was visiting Bracknell on another site we are involved in during early May 2020 and took some site photos of the completed and occupied site.
